Superfoods - 3 Cancer Fighting Citrus Fruits

Many individuals are looking for the best foods to help improve their overall health and well-being. Today, the popularity of superfoods is expanding rapidly as people want to consume foods that are full of healthy nutrients, which are the compounds that our bodies need to grow and maintain themselves. The video above, and this article, outline three citrus fruits that have cancer fighting properties, namely: limes, oranges and lemons.

Limes are an excellent source of vitamin C and fiber, in addition to containing beneficial flavonoids and liminoids. In regards to fighting cancer, a 2009 study found that lime juice inhibited pancreatic cancer cell growth in two ways: the liminoids in limes inhibit the growth process in pancreatic cancer cell growth, while its flavonoids act as antioxidants to fight cancer while at the same impeding cancer cell growth.

Similarly to limes, oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C, but they are also high in dietary fiber, vitamins A and B6, folate, calcium, magnesium and potassium. The vitamin C in oranges combines with its other antioxidants to protect against oxidative stress damage, which can result in cancer. Additionally, oranges, as a citrus fruit, have been found to be especially beneficial in warding off esophagus, larynx and stomach cancer.

Like both limes and oranges, lemons are also high in vitamin C and fiber. The antioxidants in lemons, particularly limonin and limonene, have been shown to have anti-cancer effects. Liminoids in lemons have been shown in human cell studies to combat cancer. Finally, limonin and limonene, lemon's key antioxidants, have been demonstrated to have positive anti-cancer effects for both colon and prostate cancer.
